South Dakota State University is recruiting two wildlife technicians to aid in a study of the plains spotted skunk in north-central South Dakota from March through August 2022. Successful candidates will assist a PhD student in the collection of field data to evaluate spotted skunk habitat selection and survival. Primary duties will include assisting with trapping, handling, and radio-tracking spotted skunks. Additional duties may include deploying and checking camera traps, conducting habitat surveys, maintaining equipment, data entry and management, and other project duties as assigned. Working hours will be variable and will include tracking spotted skunk locations during both daytime and nighttime hours. Shared housing and field vehicles will be provided. South Dakota State University will not pay for relocation costs (moving expenses).
Minimum Qualifications: • Possess (or be seeking) a B.S. degree in wildlife ecology, zoology, ecology or closely related field • Comfortable working under a range of weather conditions, early mornings, and late nights • Able to maintain a positive attitude under sometimes difficult field conditions • Comfortable working independently or as a team • Able to follow field safety and data collections protocols • Must possess a valid US driver’s license without restrictions Desired Qualifications: • Demonstrated navigation skills with compass/GPS • Prior experience with animal capture and handling • Prior experience with radio telemetry • Experience with data collection, entry, and management • Previously received the pre-exposure series of rabies vaccinations (not required) Application process: To apply for this position, please send a (1) cover letter detailing how you meet the minimum qualification and your experiences related to the desired qualification, (2) a resume, and (3) the names and contact information (phone number and email) of three references, as a single PDF document to Kara White at Kara.White@sdstate.edu.
