We are hiring an observer to help prevent eagle mortality at a wind power facility through tower and ground-based searches for local eagles, observer-directed turbine shutdown when eagles are sighted, completion of regular fatality searches below turbines, and other related duties. Observers will join an existing team of biologists working on rotation to provide site protection during all daylight hours and share housing near the wind project. The position is open until filled, with expected start date of March 31, 2018, and position running until October 15, 2018, and possibly longer. A minimum 3-month commitment is required. Hours worked each day will depend on the length of day by season, turbine operation, as well as the duty being performed. Housing provided within 10 minutes of the site in Monticello, Utah. Applicants should be willing to use their own vehicle to/from site and will be reimbursed at $0.55/mile (roads are generally well maintained and passable with low-clearance 2WD). The field site is near Monticello, Utah and 50 minutes from Moab, with excellent recreation opportunities on public lands, including world-class hiking, mountain biking, and climbing.
Excellent eyesight, vigilance, and moderate bird identification skills required. Previous experience with eagle point counts, fatality searches, and previous work spending long hours conducting stationary observation will be given preference. Applicants must be able to endure long hours in the sun, wind, cold, snow, or a combination of these conditions. Observation shelters will be provided for eagle sentinel duty, but observation will continue and be most important in inclement weather when eagles may enter the site at greater risk. Pay will be a competitive daily rate that is commensurate with the rigors outlined in the job description and also reflecting both the strong desire of HawkWatch and the site owner to avoid eagle mortality and advance the state of the art regarding wind farm eagle avoidance.
