- Winter field work requires a robust set of skills that can be difficult to obtain and challenging to learn on-the-job. The goal of this Winter Field Skills course is to close the gap between the skills necessary for safely and effectively conducting winter fieldwork and the opportunities available to gain those skills. We teach all aspects of basic winter field skills to prepare technicians for the rigors of the season. Course participants will gain hands on experience with skills and knowledge specific to winter field work including: - 10 essentials and how to pack for cold weather conditions - Navigation and basic survival - Avalanche awareness - Defensive, winter, and 4WD driving - Attaching, backing, and loading a trailer - Snowmobile operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting This is a rigorous, comprehensive curriculum that takes place over the course of 4 full days. Participants should be prepared to spend extended days outside in varying weather conditions, as well as lengthy indoor classroom sessions. Registration fee includes on-site lodging and course-related travel. Meals and travel to/from Winthrop, WA are not included. ALL PARTICIPANTS MUST BE FULLY VACCINATED AGAINST COVID-19.
