Wood Thrush Forest Study Technician – Pennsylvania

Avian point count technicians (2) needed for a forest management research study. The purpose of this study is to model wood thrush habitat selection and to test novel forest management techniques across Central Pennsylvania.
Technicians will receive $12/hr. Field housing will be provided.
Specific Duties: 1. Conduct early morning avian point count surveys in forest stands 2. Wood thrush nest searching and monitoring 3. Collect forest vegetation data 4. Detail-oriented data collection and data entry
Technicians will work early mornings and during inclement weather (hot, rain, mosquitos, rattlesnakes, etc.) and should be able to hike off trail on steep and rocky terrain and should be able to carry 25lbs of gear. Applicants should be prepared to work as part of a team during nest searching and vegetation measurement but comfortable working alone during pre-dawn point count surveys. Data entry into excel will take place daily at field housing or at the office following field work.
Field Season Dates: May 14, 2019 through August 23, 2019 with potential for extension
Minimum Qualifications: 1. Physically fit, motivated, and comfortable working in a remote outdoor setting 2. Previous work/birding experience identifying eastern birds by sound alone 3. Very flexible to changing work schedules, potential weekend work 4. Work well as part of a team with a good sense of humor 5. A valid driver’s license.
