Volunteers will work as part of Yosemite’s Bear team to assist in reducing human-black bear conflicts by detecting and mitigating the availability of human food within the park, focusing on Tuolumne Meadows campground and nearby areas. Description of Duties: Volunteers will assist park biologists in reducing human-wildlife conflicts and mitigating the availability of human food in campgrounds, parking lots, lodging facilities, and other park areas focusing on campgrounds and surrounding areas; completing nightly patrols of vampground and nearby areas, talking with visitors about proper food storage and black bears; assist with negative conditioning of bears and other wildlife using various techniques which may include the use of a paintball gun; disseminate campground regulations; complete daily patrol logs and bear incident reports; complete weekly clean-outs of food lockers in the district at various climbing trailheads, patrol the base of climbing areas to ensure proper food storage; monitor movements of bears using radio telemetry; and assist in capture, immobilization, tagging, and relocation of bears. Volunteers may occasionally participate in wilderness patrols, focusing on educating hikers and backpackers about bears and proper food storage, doing food storage patrols, and chasing bears from backcountry campsites.
Volunteers must commit to the position for at least three months, and those that can commit to the entire summer season will be given preference. Volunteers will work 32-40 hours/week. Volunteers should be able to work as a team member as well as independently during patrols; willing to work night hours; be in excellent physical condition to negotiate rough mountainous terrain; and have an interest in bear management issues, and educating the public about wildlife. An academic background or training in wildlife management, zoology, or biology is preferable. Must have CPR training and first aid certification, and a valid driver’s license. Length of Service: Three months minimum (entire summer preferred) Work Schedule: 32-40 hours/week Work Location: Tuolumne Meadows area.
