- Alaska Fellows Program position description Sitka Counseling and Prevention Services, Inc. Youth Outreach Fellow Sitka, AK This position is part of the Alaska Fellows Program. All fellows live together, “in community,” in their respective host site. Each host site is unique and remarkable. Fellows receive housing, a $1150 monthly living stipend and a $500 relocation stipend. The fellowship includes facilitated and funded opening and closing retreats. Work Term: September 2023 through end of May 2024 Employer: Sitka Counseling Contact: Amy Zanuzoski, Executive Director Title: Youth Outreach Fellow Organization Description: Sitka Counseling’s mission statement is “to contribute to the social, behavioral, and emotional well-being of our diverse community and its members by providing professional preventative and therapeutic behavioral health services in a welcoming, accessible, integrated, continuous, and comprehensive continuum of care.” Sitka Counseling & Prevention Services, Inc. is a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation whose primary purpose is to prevent and reduce the harmful effects of mental illness/substance abuse in the lives of youth, adults, and families by providing caring, professional, therapeutic, and preventative services. Sitka Counseling has adopted the “no wrong door” philosophy in providing behavioral health services. This model mandates a welcoming approach to all clients, eliminates arbitrary barriers to initial engagement in services, and specifies mechanisms for helping each client (regardless of presentation and motivation) to connect to a suitable program as quickly as possible whether within the agency or through the referral process. Sitka Counseling & Prevention Services continually strives to better serve our community as evidenced by increased collaboration with other agencies in the form of shared resources, contractual relationships, and integration of service delivery models. Sitka Counseling utilizes the Bio-Psycho-Social-Spiritual model in developing and providing behavioral health treatment services. This theoretical model conceptualizes mental illness and substance misuse to be a result of complex interactions among biological, psychological, social, and spiritual factors. Position Description: The Youth Outreach Fellow supports outreach education and intervention programs for youth within the community identified as “at-risk” for substance abuse. The Fellow develops age-appropriate curricula, evaluates effectiveness of programming, and identifies potential funding sources for innovative programming. Work may be performed at the school, in the community or at the facility, during the normal business hours 8a-5p. The Youth Outreach Fellow will: Conduct workshops and presentations for youth, community organizations and community members regarding substance misuse prevention Participate in community prevention coalitions and other organizations as assigned Create, edit and advertise podcasts to the community Develop monthly newsletter for HOPE coalition Create and post prevention messages on Social Media (FB and IG and others as appropriate) Monitor Sitka Parents for Drug Awareness, Education and Prevention for our Youth FB page and contribute as appropriate Participate in DEA Drug Take Back day twice a year Tracking of outcomes to make sure agency is meeting grant report deadlines and quarterly reports Document outputs in Outputs Log, MIS and/or other tracking system Develop/maintain positive working relationships with community organizations Market prevention education / awareness events utilizing available media resources, especially social media Supervise the design and distribution of prevention education materials Participate in Monthly HOPE Coalition meetings Work with Sitka Youth Leadership Coalition (SYLC) Complete all reporting requirements to Coalition Director, prevention summary forms, and quarterly reports Participate in constructing the annual prevention plan and logic models under the direction of the Coalition Director Participate in training and professional development activities for prevention Knowledge/ability to conduct community readiness/needs assessment evaluations and disseminate results Design and/or implement youth activities and strategies based on best practice approaches to prevention that reflect an understanding of youth development issues and leadership training for effective youth groups Work within school settings to help develop Student Assistance Programs in conjunction with school staff Design and/or implement activities and strategies consistent with the Risk and Protective model, other “upstream” and evidence-based approaches to prevention planning Understanding of historical trauma and ACEs and the impact on health/substance misuse Work with Sitka Tribe of Alaska to develop culturally responsive prevention programs Participate in weekly supervision with the Program Coordinator Works with Program Coordinator to implement prevention programs. Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in a behavioral health field or education, or equivalent experience; One year experience in prevention education, health education, or working with youth; Proficient oral and written communication skills, ability to complete and present comprehensive written evaluative reports; Working knowledge of substance abuse and prevention methodologies; Knowledge of and ability to work with a multicultural community population; Understanding of historical trauma and ACEs and the impact on health/substance misuse. Knowledge of and ability to utilize conflict resolution skills with staff and community population; Ability to apply sound judgment under stress. Physical Demands: This position consists of light work (exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently) as well as stair climbing, bending, writing, reaching, sitting for prolonged periods of time, driving, walking, reading, seeing, keyboarding, listening for prolonged periods of time, and ability to operate a computer. Special Requirements: TB Clearance, Criminal Background Check, Valid Driver’s License, First Aid/CPR certification, able to document 2 years of continuous abstinence if in recovery.
